Marina Developments at Port St Mary and Ramsey 16 August 2006

It is the Department of Transport’s intention to progress the next phase of marina development by commencing the detailed design of harbour improvements and a marina at Port St Mary and consulting on the options for Ramsey Inner Harbour.

At a meeting on 1st August 2006, the Minister for Transport, Hon Phil Braidwood advised Port St Mary Commissioners that the Department would be using the design fees in the current year’s capital programme to undertake the work for Port St Mary. It will take some time to put together the design team and in the interim the Minister advised that a consultation group would be established. The composition of the consultation group has yet to be fully determined but the Department would wish to involve representatives from the Commissioners, Isle of Man Yacht Club, Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI), Manx Fish Producers Organisation, and the Mannin Angling Club.

With respect to Ramsey, the Director of Harbours will shortly begin a series of meetings with the principle interested parties, namely Tynwald Members, Ramsey Town Commissioners, Manx Sailing and Cruising Club, Manx Fish Producers Organisation, Mezeron, Ramsey Steam Ship Company, Island Cement, Chamber of Commerce and Booth W Kelly Ltd, operators of the shipyard. At this stage the consultation will only address the options for the siting of a water impounding gate and the extent of any marina within the impounded area. Subject to the design fees remaining in Government’s capital programme, the Department would intend to progress a detailed design in 2007/08. This work would involve the detailed environmental impact studies that will be required for a planning application, and will also involve a similar consultation group to that planned for Port St Mary.
