Fire chiefs to stage Flat Fire Safety Seminars 23 February 2007

FLAT owners, landlords, estate agents, and property developers are being invited to attend a free seminar on fire safety.

The Isle of Man Fire and Rescue Service is hosting the informative sessions on March 19 and 21 to explain the requirements of fire safety regulations in respect of flats.

The seminars follow a court case in January when a landlord was convicted of the manslaughter of a tenant for failing to comply with fire safety measures in a property on Demesne Road, Douglas.

Acting Deemster Simon Fawcus jailed the landlord for 15 months and fined his company a total of £8,500 for breaches of the Fire Precautions (Flats) Regulations 1996.

In addition, he was personally ordered to pay costs amounting to £25,000 and his company a further £10,000 costs. Station Officer Willie Cowley is co-ordinating the seminars.

He said: ‘The intention of holding the seminars is to attract people who own or let flats as well as property developers and even lawyers who undertake conveyancing work. We want to enhance local knowledge of the fire safety regulations with regard to flats because we repeatedly see evidence that people are not complying. Failing to comply can have tragic consequences and individuals can be liable.’

The Flat Fire Safety Seminars will be staged at Keyll Darree lecture room, near the new Noble’s Hospital. Anyone interested in attending should book for one of the four sessions:

  • Monday March 19 at 10am-12noon or 2pm-4pm
  • Wednesday March 21 at 2-4pm or 7-9pm

Each seminar last two hours which includes time for questions.

Entry is free but booking is required. Please contact 674303 to reserve a place or email iomfire@gov.im before March 16.
