Stamp prices to remain unchanged 26 February 2007

Isle of Man Post Office has announced that the price to send a local letter and one to the United Kingdom weighing up to 100 grams will remain unchanged at 28p and 31p respectively. With more than 90% of all mail sent being letters, the majority of customers will enjoy postage prices being held for a further year.

The cost to send large letters and packets will increase on April 2, 2007 along with Special Delivery, Airmail, international surface mail and ancillary services which includes private boxes, business reply, freepost and redirection. The overall affect of the price changes equates to an increase in postage income of 3.6% for Isle of Man Post Office.

Continuing with the principle of Pricing in Proportion, the changes to large letters and packet prices further reflects the policy of aligning public tariffs to the cost of collecting, sorting and delivery of large and bulky items.

Chairman of Isle of Man Post Office, Pamela M Crowe MLC, said: “Obviously the good news for our Isle of Man customers is that the basic local and UK letter rates remain unchanged. The Isle of Man Post Office is committed to providing a value for money service and our prices for basic letter rates are well below that of our counterparts in the UK and Channel Islands.”

NOTES TO EDITORS

• In August 2006, Isle of Man Post Office introduced Pricing in Proportion – a more logical way of pricing that more accurately reflects the costs of handling items of mail. The system prices mail on the basis of its size as well its weight. This means people pay the same for small items of post and more for larger items.

• The Pricing in Proportion system simplified the pricing structure into three categories – letter, large letter and packet.

• For the majority of customers, Pricing in Proportion made little difference: more than 90% of mail currently posted falls into the ‘letter’ category. These customers have the advantage of being able to send up to 100 grams for this price, up from the original limit of 60 grams.
