Open day planned for Ardwhallan 5 March 2007

AN open day is planned for the Ardwhallan Outdoor Education Centre.

Paul Young, who is the Department of Education's Outdoor Education Officer, said: 'We intend holding an open day on March 17 for all youth groups, schools and individuals who have expressed an interest in the Viking Longhouse project to have a look at what we have achieved so far and give them the opportunity to plant a tree and make willow fences.'

It is planned to build a life-size Viking Longhouse, complete with artefacts of life on a small homestead 1,000 years ago. Young people will be involved in the construction. All the stone, trees and turf are to be found near Ardwhallan and the construction process will follow Viking methods where possible.

Students from the Isle of Man College, Queen Elizabeth II High School, Scoill Phurt-le-Moirrey, the Bunscoill, Kewaigue School and Ashley Hill School have already planted trees and shrubs that were indigenous to the Isle of Man 1,000 years ago and carried out willow fence-making.

The open day event takes place from 10am-4pm.

Said Paul: 'Strong footwear and warm clothes are recommended apparel. If individuals or groups would like to attend the open day, they should let me know in advance for their numbers and time of arrival.'

Paul can be contacted on 835711 or via email at p.young@doe.gov.im

The laying of the first stone of the longhouse by Education Minister Anne Craine MHK will take place in the summer.
