Community to be consulted over land exchange suggestion 4 May 2007

THE community of Kirk Michael is to be consulted over the possibility of a land exchange which could benefit the village school.

The Department of Education has been approached by developer Heritage Homes over an opportunity which could see the Department give up land to the south of the school in exchange for a bigger area to the north and east.

An exchange could mean the provision of a proper football pitch to the rear of the school together with a new playground. It would secure land to the north of the school for possible future expansion as pupil numbers grow.

The Department has consulted with the school’s governors and with Michael Commissioners and now wishes to obtain the views of parents and the community on the proposal.

Education Minister Anne Craine MHK said:

‘This is an interesting opportunity for the future development of Michael School and one we should consider seriously. It is important, however, that we obtain the views of those living in the community before deciding how to progress with this proposal.
A public presentation is to be held at the school on Thursday, May 17 from 3pm to 7.30pm and it is hoped as many parents and residents as possible will come along and consider the proposals and let us have their views.’

The Minister said:

‘No decisions have been made but this is a critical juncture in the future of the school and we need to weigh up this proposal and make the best decision now in the interests of existing schoolchildren and future generations.’
