Peel Flap Gate Modification works 13 September 2007

Following the successful completion of the preparatory works last week, the modification works to the flap gate are scheduled to take place between September 19th and September 24th, subject to weather conditions.

Preparations for the modification works will start at 12pm on Tuesday, 18th September, when the swingbridge will be closed to pedestrians for the duration of the works.

As with the preparatory works, this project is intended to take place over daytime low water periods when the flap gate would normally be raised, thereby minimising disruption to vessels as much as possible.

The work will consist of cutting two, four-metre wide sections from the top of the gate, the installation of appropriate stiffening plates and the replacement of the cover plates over the castellations. The exposed steelwork will then be blast cleaned and painted.

Once completed, this should help to ensure that the build up of water in the inner harbour due to heavier than normal rainfall is reduced and will assist in ensuring that the flap gate operates on all states of the tide.

Vessels wishing to pass through the flap gate opening should contact Peel Harbour Office on 842338 during normal daytime operational hours or VHF Ch12, or Douglas Harbour Control on 686628 or VHF Ch12 at all other times for further information, such as gate opening times.

The Department regrets any inconvenience which may be caused to both harbour users and members of the public wishing to use the swingbridge during the above period and will do its utmost to minimise the time required to complete the works.
