Weather delays Peel Flap Gate works 18 September 2007

Modification works to Peel flap gate have been delayed after advice from the Met Office.

Following the successful completion of the preparatory works two weeks ago, modification works to the flap gate were scheduled to take place between Wednesday, September 19th and Sunday, September 24th, with preparations starting at noon today (Tuesday), subject to weather conditions.

However, following advice from the Met Office, the decision was taken to postpone the works to a later date.

Captain Martin Bell, Port Manager (Outports), explained:

‘The design engineers have been advised that the anticipated winds would not be suitable for crane work, and as such the works will now take place at the first opportunity in October, which will most likely see an October 3rd start, again subject to weather conditions.’

The swingbridge will be closed to pedestrians for the duration of the works and, as with the preparatory works, the scheme will be carried out over daytime low water periods when the flap gate would normally be raised, thereby minimising disruption to vessels as much as possible.

The work will consist of cutting two, four-metre wide sections from the top of the gate, the installation of appropriate stiffening plates and the replacement of the cover plates over the castellations. The exposed steelwork will then be blast cleaned and painted.

Once completed, this should help to ensure that the build up of water in the inner harbour due to heavier than normal rainfall is reduced and will assist in ensuring that the flap gate operates on all states of the tide.
