A further week of industrial action announced 9 October 2007

Staff employed by Royal Mail return to work tomorrow morning following four days of strike action. Over the next few days Royal Mail will endeavour to clear as much of the backlog of mail as possible. They are also introducing enhancements to their road and air networks in a bid to speed up the recovery process. Isle of Man Post Office will aim to process and deliver to customers any backlog as soon as it is received.

During this period leading up to and including the days of industrial action, Isle of Man Post Office is pleased to advise customers that it received and was able to deliver over 80% of the normal volume of inbound mail. This indicated that customers heeded the advice to post early to avoid the strikes and the success of the contingency arrangements agreed with Royal Mail.

The Communication Workers Union (CWU) has regrettably announced more industrial action in the form of five 24-hour strikes with effect from Monday 15th October 2007. The announcement follows unsuccessful talks between the CWU and Royal Mail over pay and conditions.

The Island’s inbound and outbound mail is most likely to be disrupted during the early part of next week and the guarantee for Special Delivery will continue to be suspended until further notice. Isle of Man Post Office advises customers to post their letters and packets before the weekend to avoid any delay to their mail bound for UK, European and international destinations.

Any customers who have urgent items to send next week are strongly advised to use Parcelforce’s guaranteed next day services.

Isle of Man Post Office employees will not be involved in the industrial action and further information about the strikes will be issued once it is known.
