Arcade Colonnade Refurbishment/Gaiety Filming 10 March 2008

The Department of Tourism and Leisure, following a request from the Film Commission Division of the Department of Trade and Industry, have agreed to a cessation of all noise intrusive works at the Villa Marina Arcade site until Saturday 15th March 2008, to allow uninterrupted filming of Richard Linklater’s adaptation of Robert Kaplow’s coming-of-age novel, ‘Me and Orson Welles’, starring Zac Efron.

In coming to this agreement the Department, along with the contractor, Parkinson Limited and the project Design Team, carefully considered the potential impact any decision would have on the progress of the £4.5 million redevelopment scheme which will comprise retail space, a multi purpose performance area, a café/bar, refurbished toilets, as well as the installation of the fully restored Wurlitzer organ.

Although work has been stepped back considerably in order that filming can be accommodated, there has been continual progress, with the domed glass roof being fitted in February.

Hon A Earnshaw MHK, Minister of Tourism and Leisure commented:

‘Whilst completion of the Villa Marina Arcade project is a priority for the Department we are delighted that all parties have consulted and come to an amicable agreement in allowing the filming at the Gaiety to continue without disruption. There is no doubt that both projects will bring benefits to the Island and bring our beautifully restored Matcham theatre to a world wide audience, and I would like to thank all involved for finding a satisfactory solution.’
