Coaches celebrate a successful 2008 HSBC Manx Youth Games 23 May 2008

150 HSBC Manx Youth Games Coaches attended the Villa Marina last week to join together to celebrate another hugely successful Games. It is the first year that such an event has been organised, with the rationale to pay tribute to the hard work and commitment of the coaches who have volunteered since January teaching and coaching the thousands of children involved.

The Department of Tourism and Leisure has been facilitating this event since 2002, with the financial support of HSBC, who this year very generously funded the cost of a ‘Thank you Party’. Coaches were treated to a two course meal and were each awarded with a special memento to recognise their hard work.

Mr. Quintin Gill MHK, Political member for DTL, opened the evening and was full of praise for the valuable contribution played by the volunteers. He said:

‘It is with great pleasure that I am able to personally thank all the Coaches for their fantastic dedication to this marvellous event. They should all feel immensely proud of the major part they have played in helping so many young people grow and develop through sport – providing them with valuable life skills. I would also like to thank our sponsors HSBC for their continued support, and for helping to organise and facilitate one of the Island’s most popular and successful events.’

Caroline Cornish, Head of HSBC Securities Services (IOM) Limited, added:

‘We are proud to support the HSBC Manx Youth Games which embodies everything good about sport and friendly competition, living up to the saying ‘it’s not the winning but the taking part’, and bringing much happiness and camaraderie to the children that participate – their smiles are worth every penny and their improved general health is priceless.’

Mike Hennessey, Area Manager HSBC, also paid tribute to the wonderful work of the Coaches and distributed unique HSBC stop watches and whistles as a token of their appreciation. They also announced that HSBC would be continuing to sponsor the Games for a further three years – carrying on their involvement up until and including 2011.

Planning will now start for the 2009 event as the Department of Tourism and Leisure’s Sports Development Unit meet with each of the Governing Bodies of Sport on the Island to prepare for all the training sessions which will commence in January next year.
