Tchaikovsky Spectacular will benefit music charities 16 October 2008

A major fundraising event, in aid of local music charities, is set to be staged at the Villa Marina in November by the Isle of Man Symphony Orchestra.

Tchaikovsky Spectacular, sponsored by Boston Charitable Foundation, will take place on Sunday 30 November at 2.30pm.

The event, conducted by Maurice Powell, will feature renowned piano soloist Dimitar Pentchev performing Tchaikovsky’s First Piano Concerto and the Academy of Dance staging excerpts from the Nutcracker Ballet Suite. The programme will also include March Slav and music from Romeo and Juliet. IoMso concert

Ruth Robinson, who is responsible for the Boston Charitable Foundation, said: 'There is so much musical talent in the Isle of Man and these events are fantastic for showcasing what the Island has to offer. All the proceeds from ticket sales will go to the Manx Youth Orchestra, Manx Youth Choir and the Isle of Man Symphony Orchestra and so we are delighted to be able to assist the Island’s musical community.'

Ruth, a chartered certified accountant, was one of the first employees of the Boston Group and continues to manage the interests of the founding family. She commented:

'Boston Charitable Foundation has been established by the Boston Group, specifically to support local Isle of Man focused charities. Boston Charitable Foundation hopes to be able to play its part in the Manx community by supporting more events and other fund raising initiatives where local people will benefit.'

This is the first time the 70-strong Isle of Man Symphony Orchestra has presented a concert of its own at the Island’s most prestigious concert venue.

In recent years the orchestra has grown in stature and prestige and has performed some of the most exciting music in the classical repertoire. The Tchaikovsky Spectacular is one of the most challenging programmes the orchestra has presented so far.

Musical Director Maurice Powell said:

'This is the biggest concert the orchestra has ever mounted. It has something for everyone as we approach the festive season, including music from The Nutcracker, a Christmas favourite, and the first piano concerto, which is perhaps the most performed piano concerto ever written. Soloist Dimitar Penchev was immediately enthusiastic about the concert when he was approached last year, for he has long cherished the wish to perform the Tchaikovsky First Piano Concerto with an orchestra. The concerto is a formidable challenge for the pianist, containing as it does some of the most virtuosic and physically demanding passages in the entire piano concerto repertoire. Tchaikovsky’s view was that a concerto should be a battle between the soloist and the orchestra, so be prepared for sparks to fly!'
