Post Office supports firefighters' 24-hour ladder climb challenge 13 July 2012

A team of firemen, who are set take on the epic challenge of climbing a combined 110, 400m today, have received the full support of Isle of Man Post Office.

Isle of Man Post Office has given permission for the challenge organisers to use Regent Street Post Office as the building in which to carry out this 24-hour record breaking attempt. In addition, the business has also given the team full use of kitchen and toilet facilities within the building throughout the duration.

During the challenge, 10 firefighters will scale a 15-metre ladder at regular intervals and slide back down a metal pole before repeating the process many, many times. The team will be trying to surpass the current world best of 109.56 kilometres, set in 2005 by a group of New Zealand firefighters.

Along the way they are hoping to raise thousands of pounds for five nominated charities – Pumps 4 Kids, Rebecca House, Craig’s Heartstrong Foundation, Help for Heroes and the Hyperbaric Chamber. It all starts this afternoon (Friday) at 3pm.

Tony Deakin, Properties Manager, Isle of Man Post Office said:

“We were more than happy to help the Isle of Man Fire and Rescue Service with their valiant challenge and wish the team all the very best of luck with achieving their record breaking attempt. This event has been months in the planning and we are sure it will be an overwhelming success. Good luck to everyone involved.”

Gary Kirby, the main event organiser and firefighter said:

“We appreciate all the help and support we have received from Isle of Man Post Office. Without their assistance, this challenge wouldn’t be possible, there is no other building that’s so ideal and in such a perfect location. I cannot thank the Post Office staff involved enough for all they have done for us.”
