Troublemakers to be Banned 5 December 2003

Public transport bosses at the Department of Tourism and Leisure have issued a warning that bad behaviour by passengers on buses will not be tolerated.

Drivers operating journeys carrying schoolchildren have occasionally been forced to seek assistance from supervisors at Banks Circus Headquarters to persuade passengers to calm down, resulting in some children returning home later than expected.

Tourism Minister David Cretney, whose Department is responsible for public transport, said:

"I have received a significant number of complaints from parents whose innocent children have been caught up in this. It seems a minority of badly behaved young people are causing a disturbance on the buses after school. The purpose of this announcement is to warn those responsible that their behaviour is unacceptable and will not be tolerated. We will be monitoring and investigating the routes affected and when the culprits are identified they will be banned from using the buses for a period.

"I hope to work with the Department of Education to encourage an improvement in the attitude of young passengers towards each other on their bus journey. We carry over 3,000 state school pupils to and from school each day and a minority are causing us these problems."

Education Minister Steve Rodan commented:

"I support the actions proposed by Mr Cretney to tackle the problems caused by this minority of young people. It is important that standards are maintained and that these children learn the consequences of their behaviour."
