Unemployment Rises to 1% 12 February 2004

At the end of January the jobless total stood at 386, an unemployment rate of 1% of the economically active population.

Of the total unemployed, 289 are males and 97 are females. These figures include 31 persons who required work permits and 28 who were signing on for National Insurance credits only.

During the month 200 claimants signed on the register and 141 signed off, giving a rise of 59 on the figure for December. Reflecting the seasonal element in movements on to the unemployment register, two of the areas of greatest job loss were construction and retailing.

The number of vacancies notified to the Job Centre during January was 254. At the end of the month there were 495 jobs held on file, 91 more than last year's comparable figure.
