Linden Grove Affordable Homes 25 June 2004

The Minister for Local Government and the Environment, Hon. Pamela M. Crowe, MLC, will formally commence a development to provide 40 new affordable homes at Linden Grove, Douglas, on the 28th June. The old industrial buildings on the site, which were previously occupied by Manx Telecom, have been cleared and construction work is about to start. The scheme is to be named “Linden Gardens” and it will provide 16 two-bedroomed houses, 20 two-bedroomed apartments and 4 one-bedroomed apartments for sale to First-Time Buyers, at prices between £100,000 and £125,000.

Mrs. Crowe said:

"The Department is committed to providing affordable homes and since the launch of the First-Time Buyers Scheme, 175 properties have been completed and a further 141 are on site or about to commence on site. Almost 600 of the prospective First-Time Buyers on the Department’s Register have indicated Douglas, Onchan or Braddan as their first preference. In order to try and satisfy this demand, the Department will complete a development of 18 apartments at Westmoreland Road Douglas in July 2004 and a further 28 apartments are under construction on the former Church Site in Pulrose. Linden Gardens will provide an additional 40 homes for occupation next year."

Planning Applications have also been submitted by the Department for 205 First-Time Buyer homes on two sites at Johnny Watterson’s Lane and Ballanard Road in Douglas to help contribute towards providing sufficient homes to meet the high demand for housing in the east of the Island.

The developer for Linden Gardens is J.G. Kelly Ltd. who has successfully collaborated with the Department on several previous First-Time Buyer Schemes in various locations across the Island.

Mrs Crowe added:

“I am looking forward to seeing the completed development. The distinctive design, produced by the Department’s own Architectural team, creates a crescent of housing overlooking a communal garden, reminiscent of the squares of historic Douglas. I am confident it will make an attractive addition to the townscape and also provide much-needed new housing units for first-time buyers as part of the Housing Strategy.”
