Hospital Report 9 July 2004

During July 2003, Noble's Hospital moved from Westmoreland Road, Douglas, to its new location at Strang, Braddan. The logistics associated with this move disrupted planned admissions and out-patient clinics in some areas over a number of weeks, which had an effect on overall activity during the year under review.

Levels of activity at Noble's Hospital increased during the last financial year. In particular, the number of in-patient admissions has increased by 1,052 (9.2%) to 12,482.

Despite an increase in in-patient activity, the in-patient waiting lists have shown an increase during the last year of 293 (30.7%). The main contributory factor is increased demand, and actions are being taken to address this, including through the provision of additional resources.

The number of out-patient attendances fell slightly during the year to 60,259, a reduction of 2.9% compared with 2002/03. The waiting lists for out-patients increased by 815 (53.5%) compared with the previous year.

At Ramsey Cottage Hospital the number of out-patient attendances has declined by 1,103 (18.5%), and the number of patients waiting for an appointment has reduced by 37 (17.5%). At the end of March 2004, only 175 patients were waiting for an appointment and it is expected that approximately 80% of these patients will be seen within six months.

The number of surgical procedures carried out at Ramsey Cottage Hospital increased significantly during the last year to 404. This increase has been due to the appointment of an additional Surgeon who has undertaken additional work at Ramsey.

In the last financial year, just over 10% of all out-patient appointments were not kept by patients who also did not notify the Hospital that they were unable to keep the appointment.

The Department of Health and Social Security would encourage all patients who have an appointment and who are unable to attend to notify the Hospital as soon as possible, so that their appointment can be reallocated.

In the last year 692 private surgical procedures were carried out, a reduction on the previous year of 173 (20%).

The 10th Annual Report on Hospital Activity compiled by the Department of Health and Social Security will be laid before the July Sitting of Tynwald on the 13th July. The Report contains all the information above and gives an indication of the types of activity undertaken in Noble's and Ramsey Cottage Hospital during the last financial year. It also provides a guide to the waiting times for in-patient and out-patient appointments for various specialties at both Hospitals.
