Special Bus for Friday 18 May 2005

The Department of Tourism and Leisure has announced it will run a special bus service 24A to serve the north area of the promenade on Friday (May 20).

All normal bus services along Douglas promenades will not be able to run between 0845 and approximately 1600 hours because of security arrangements for the British-Irish Council meeting being staged at the Villa Marina. Roads around the Villa will be closed to all pedestrians and traffic while the conference takes place.

However, the Department plans to run the special service number 24A between Public Transport headquarters at Banks Circus to Castle Mona Avenue via North Quay, Woodbourne Road, Summerhill and Queen’s Promenade. The first bus will depart at 0958 (1003 from North Quay) and will run via Buck’s Road and Summerhill to arrive at Central Promenade beside Castle Mona Avenue. A shopping service will depart from the promenade near the Mona Drive junction at 1030 to return to Banks Circus via Summerhill, Woodbourne Road and Victoria Street.

Providing there is no problem with running the special bus service, the 24A will operate again, departing Banks Circus at 1258 (1303 from North Quay), returning at 1330 from Central Promenade.

Director of Public Transport David Howard commented:

"We’re doing everything we can to operate this special service but with the road restrictions and barriers in place reversing and turning the buses at Castle Mona Avenue will be very problematical. With the assistance of the police, we hope any health and safety implications can be overcome. We’ll certainly try our best unless it’s physically impossible to turn the bus in this area."

Bus services will be diverted as follows on Friday between 0845 and the close of the British-Irish Council meeting. Roads are expected to open by 1600 hours at the latest.

Service 3/3C will go via Woodbourne Road and Bucks Road between Ballaquayle Road and Lower Douglas.

Service 23/24 will go via Royal Avenue, Glencrutchery Road, Woodbourne Road and Bucks Road, between Sunningdale Drive and Lower Douglas.

Service 25/26 will go via the Manx Arms, Glencrutchery Road, Woodbourne Road and Bucks Road between Avondale Road and Lower Douglas.

Service 27 will go via Bucks Road, Woodbourne Road, Glencrutchery Road and Blackberry Lane to Summerhill Road.

Service 28 will go via Bucks Road, Woodbourne Road and York Road between Lower Douglas and Victoria Road.

Throughout the road closure, buses will not serve the stops located on Douglas promenades, Ballaquayle Road shops, Port Jack, Falkland Drive and Eskdale Road. Royal Avenue will be served by services 23 and 24.
