Island Deals with Problematic Waste 14 January 2004 The Department of Local Government and the
Environment have appointed Cleanaway UK Limited to provide a collection and
disposal service for problematic wastes arising on the Isle of Man.
The service will be available from 12th January 2004.
Although the Island’s Energy-from-Waste facility
will be operational in 2004 there will still be certain problematic wastes that
will not be acceptable for incineration. These will include a variety of
difficult wastes generated from industry, retailers and the public which present
special problems for environmentally sound disposal. They may include, for
example, chemical wastes, batteries, fluorescent light tubes, hazardous
household wastes etc.
Cleanaway are a leading UK waste management company and will bring a
considerable amount of experience and expertise to the task including
state-of-the-art treatment and disposal in England. They also have particular
expertise in the transfrontier shipment regulations that apply to waste exports
from the Island.
The services Cleanaway will provide include the identification, safe packaging
and labelling, collection and movement to an appropriate waste management
facility, with regular collections being scheduled throughout the year.
