Two-Strokes at MGP 26 June 2004

After the excitement of the TT, thoughts now turn to the Manx Grand Prix, which takes place on the Snaefell Mountain Course in August. Entries have just closed and include the only American rider ever to win the TT New Yorker Dave Roper. He will compete in the 500cc Classic MGP on a G50 Matchless of similar type to that on which he won the 1984 500cc Historic TT.

Although the Manx Motor Cycle Club has already decided to drop two-stroke machines from next year's TT, it has yet to address next year's race programme, so the strokers may be reprieved to notch up further glory on the TT Course. This year's Lightweight MGP race is for 125cc two-strokes and 400cc four-strokes combined, whereas they ran as separate races at the TT. In early years the 125cc models had the legs on their 400cc counterparts, but recently the four-cylinder bikes have taken the advantage. Last year's combined race was won by newcomer Stuart Sturrock from Fife on a 400cc Yamaha at 108.04mph. Best 125cc rider was Tony Cawte (Honda) from Crosby, Isle of Man, who finished 13th at 103.18mph.

The two-strokes will not be confined to the 125cc class, however. They will make up the predominance of the Lightweight 250cc race, where the vee-twins are still quite a force to be reckoned with in overall lap speeds. Norman Kneen (Honda) from Kirk Michael, Isle of Man, won last year at 110.75mph. A number of 250cc riders are also set to take part in the 600cc Junior event, where Steve Kuenne (Honda) from Crewe was the best last year, finishing 11th at 111.32mph.

After this year's event, it will then be up to the Manx club to decide the fate of the two-strokes for the 2005 Manx Grand Prix. They have already given them their marching orders for the 2005 TT, but it would appear there might be a better case for their retention at the Manx. The decision will be made in July.

The lap record for the Manx stands to Paul Duckett from Douglas, Isle of Man. He lapped in 18 minutes 59 seconds, an average speed of 119.25mph during last year's Senior race winning ride on a 750cc Wilson and Collins Kawasaki. The lap record at the TT stands to John McGuinness (1000cc Yamaha), who lapped in 17 minutes 43.8 seconds, an average speed of 127.68mph during his winning ride in this year's Formula One race. Therefore the difference is one minute 15.2 seconds, or 8.43mph.

One of the most interesting machines entered in this year's Classic Manx Grand Prix is a 500cc Paton to be ridden by TT veteran Steve Linsdell from Flitwick, Bedfordshire. The Italian twin-cylinder bikes aroused plenty of attention when they competed in the TT and other World Championship grands prix in the 1960s, when riders included Angelo Bergamonti, Fred Stevens and Billie Nelson. Mike Hailwood rode a 125cc bike of the same marque to seventh place in the 1958 Ultra-Lightweight TT. Steve Linsdell is a proven TT rider with two previous top-three placings, including second to John McGuinness in this year's 400cc.
