The Manx Classic is back ! 11 November 2005

A proposed new motorsport event to note in 2006 diaries is The Manx Classic 2006 to be held 20-22 April. Organised by the Manx Motor Racing Club, and sponsored by Singer & Freidlander, the event features three different competitions with classes for historic and modern cars.

The first competition will be an evening sprint on Thursday 20 April on the TT course. The next day competitors will move to the north of the Island for a pursuit sprint on the new Jurby racing circuit contained within the airfield. Day three hill climb features the popular venue for many of the MMRC’s previous events, the Lhergy Frissell hill climb near Ramsey with its 2.2 kilometre course and hairpin bends, again part of the TT Course.

The organisers have met with Transport Minister, Hon Phil Braidwood, officers from his Department and Department of Tourism & Leisure, who all have in principle supported the proposal.

The hill climb and sprint will be held on closed “public” roads, marshalled by the club with full safety measures in place and radio communications.

    The Hon Phil Braidwood said:

‘The Bray Hill Sprint is a new event. I am aware of the possible inconvenience and disruption to local residents, and would wish to thank them for their continued support.’

Tourism Minister Hon David Cretney said:

‘I would like to stress that, in supporting the MMRC with their application for road closures for this event, there are performance measures set out by my Department in terms of visitor arrivals and competitors.
‘My Department supports many events and I am delighted that the MMRC have reformed which should see the introduction of new classic Motorsport events to the Island.’

Various special activities include a welcome reception, a cavalcade around the Island’s original 1905 TT course, a theatre evening and a wrap-up awards dinner. All inclusive packages including entries, ferry, four-star hotel and awards dinner are available and there is a discount for early entries.

Assisting in the organisation of the event are the Manx Motorsport Marshals Association and the Isle of Man TT Marshals Association. The Manx Motor Racing Club, recently reformed with a new organising committee, previously ran the successful Manx Classic Challenge until 2001 when foot-and-mouth- restrictions caused cancellation. The club also attracted up to 120 entries to its unique Three Hills events between 1999 and 2002.

More information is available on the club’s website at or by writing to: The Secretary, Manx Motor Racing Club Limited, PO Box 359, Douglas, Isle of Man, IM99 3EU, British Isles.
