Summerland demolition scheduled for October start 12 September 2005

The full scale demolition of the Summerland building on the north end of Douglas Promenade is scheduled to commence in early October.

The Manx Electric Railway will close for the winter on Sunday October 2, with the demolition contractor – a joint venture consortium between off-island specialist DSM and local contractor JCK - having access to the site from October 3.

Minister for Tourism and Leisure David Cretney commented: ‘It seemed a good opportunity to take advantage of the fact that both Summerland and the MER fall under my Department’s remit. It enables us to co-ordinate the work and try to minimise the disruption to tram passengers.

‘The first steps in the demolition process will be removal of the 550 volt MER overhead cables to enable safe access and relocation of the MEA sub-station embedded in the Summerland building. Once that is done a rather unattractive landmark will soon start to disappear.’

Although the vast majority of Summerland will be demolished, engineers have decided to leave a small portion of the structure in place pending further investigations into cliff stability.

Mr Cretney added: ‘There is a small section of the Aquadrome building which is attached to the actual cliff face. Whilst originally it was gaining support from the cliff, there is a concern that the situation may over time have reversed and now the structure may be supporting that bit of the cliff. We are therefore being ultra cautious and leaving that part of the structure in place until we can be certain as to the position.’
