Red light cameras on the way 2 September 2005

Red light cameras have been ordered for the Woodbourne Road/York junction. Installation is expected to commence early next month. There have been a number of instances where motorists have been running the red light, particularly at peak traffic times and when children have been using the pedestrian phase on their way to school.

The Department is concerned about the increase in the number of instances of red light running around the Island and if this trend continues there could be more red light cameras on the way. The cameras are a road safety measure to reduce and prevent accidents and injuries to all road users. They are a visible deterrent to reduce the instances of red light running and make the roads safer for all.

Captain Andrew Douglas MHK, Highways Member said:

“We would hope that people would have common sense to realise that this is not a safe way of driving”.
