Camera Obscura Visitor Numbers 30 August 2005

The first season of operation of the refurbished Great Union Camera Obscura has proved to be a great success with over 4000 people already having taken the opportunity to visit the refurbished Victorian curiosity.

The Camera Obscura, now clearly visible again on Douglas Head following extensive refurbishment by DLGE, was handed to the Department of Tourism and Leisure in April 2005 and is voluntarily manned by the Isle of Man Victorian Society.

Peter Kelly of the Society stated:

‘The number of visitors has far exceeded our expectations and our volunteers have been kept busy throughout this first season of operation. The enthusiasm for the Camera Obscura from visitors is encouraging – it is particularly interesting that in this hi-tech era children are still fascinated by what is a fairly simple mechanical device.’

Eddie Lowey MLC, Chairman of the Leisure Division of DTL, added:

‘We are grateful to the Victorian Society for their willing and enthusiastic volunteers who man the Camera Obscura – their assistance is invaluable and has enabled both residents and visitors to the Island to enjoy its unusual delights.’

    Mr Lowey continued:

‘As adverse weather conditions do interfere with successful viewing from the Camera Obscura, it was decided to open weekends and Bank Holidays only throughout this first season. As the last weekend of opening will be 3rd and 4th September, we would encourage as many people as possible to make the trip to Douglas Head to visit the Camera Obscura.’
The Great Union Camera Obscura is open weekends and Bank Holidays May to September - last weekend for 2005 3rd and 4th September.
Opening Times - Saturdays 1pm – 4pm, Sundays and Bank Holidays 11am – 4pm Admission £2 for adults, accompanied children free.
