Chief Minister welcomes agreement on international personality 17 January 2006

CHIEF Minister Donald Gelling MLC has welcomed an agreement with the United Kingdom to develop the Isle of Man’s ‘international personality’ – its ability to deal directly with governments and organisations around the world.

Mr Gelling, along with his counterparts from Jersey and Guernsey, met the UK Lord Chancellor Lord Falconer in London on Wednesday (January 11, 2006) and agreed a statement of intent to produce a framework for the development and implementation of international personalities for all three Crown Dependencies.

    The Chief Minister commented:
‘This is a welcome step forward, reflecting the growing maturity of the Isle of Man as a responsible jurisdiction. The clarification of our ability to represent ourselves on the global stage will be good for the Island’s international profile and for our relations with the United Kingdom.’
    He explained:
‘Historically, international matters affecting the Island were all handled by the United Kingdom. In recent years there has been a growing trend for us to conduct our own negotiations, resulting for example in last year’s economic agreement with the Netherlands.
‘The United Kingdom is ultimately responsible for the Isle of Man internationally and the statement of intent does not change that. But I hope that it will pave the way for a clearer understanding of our rights to represent ourselves within the context of our constitutional relationship with the UK.’
