Food Safety Unit Re-issues General Advice on Poultry and Eggs 7 April 2006

The Food Safety Unit of the Department of Local Government and the Environment has issued advice to the general public and others that avian flu does not pose a food safety risk for Isle of Man consumers. This advice follows the discovery of one confirmed case of the avian flu virus (H5N1) in the UK, in a dead wild bird. There have been no cases reported in the Isle of Man.

The Department’s Food Safety Manager, Ivan Bratty states that,

“Poultry and poultry products can be prepared and eaten as usual (following good hygiene practice and proper cooking), with no fear of acquiring infection. Our advice is no different from that which we normally give for the proper handling of food during preparation, i.e. when handling raw poultry, the person involved in the food preparation should wash their hands thoroughly and clean work surfaces and utensils in contact with the poultry products. Soap and hot water are sufficient for this purpose”.

He continued

“There is no reason why people who enjoy eating poultry and eggs should not continue to do so. They should follow the normal precautions of cooking thoroughly, i.e. cooking until there are no red juices, or in the case of eggs, cooking until the white is hard. This advice applies to cooking all poultry, not just because of the possibility of avian flu.”
