More Pontoons to become available at Douglas Harbour as Phase Two Contruction starts 10 July 2006

The introduction of pontoons in Douglas Harbour has proved to be so popular that the Department of Transport has decided to push forward with Phase Two of its development of such facilities at Douglas Harbour.

Following extensive consultations with Harbour users and the Douglas Bay Yacht Club as to what is exactly required, plans have been agreed and work is due to start on site on 10th July 2006.

The current pontoon capacity is 71 berths, accommodating three types of vessel; up to 8 metres long, between 8-10 metres long, between 10-12 metres long. The Phase Two pontoons will follow a different layout and be more adaptable, with most berths able to take vessels up to 12 metres long provided their draught is shallow.

Captain Michael Brew, Director of Harbours comments

“The demand for contracted pontoon facilities in Douglas Harbour significantly exceeds what we can provide with our current arrangements – in fact, we have a waiting list to provide regular berths for over 50 boats. Our Phase Two plan will provide facilities that will certainly satisfy immediate demand and improve the facilities we can offer to visitors. We are very keen to support the expansion of the Island’s leisure market and think that further enhancement of the Douglas pontoon facilities will encourage more boats and yachts to visit the Isle of Man.”

The Department of Transport has appointed Intermarine Ltd of Southampton as the supplier and main contractor for the installation of the pontoons. In turn Laxey Towing, has been sub-contracted to undertake the pile driving and installation of the pontoons. The pile driving will take approximately two weeks to complete, after which the services (the electric and water supply) will be completed. It is hoped that the new pontoon will be fully operational by late summer.
