Isle of Man Goes down a Storm 19 July 2006

Famous faces came out in force on Monday night for the world premiere of Stormbreaker, a movie based on the popular novels by Anthony Horowitz, about reluctant teenage spy Alex Rider.

Ewan McGregor, Bill Nighy, Alicia Silverstone, Sophie Okonedo and the star of the film Alex Pettyfer were amongst those walking the red carpet in Leicester Square to promote what is expected to be the biggest British movie of the summer.

The stars were quick to praise the movie and its primary filming location, the Isle of Man. Bill Nighy who plays Alan Blunt, head of MI6 special operations, has filmed many times in the Isle of Man. He comments: ‘I’ve been to the Island lots of times on many different films and Thank God for the Isle of Man. Virtually all British films under a certain budget would not get made if it was not for the Isle of Man and Isle of Man Film.’ Nighy continues: ‘I stayed at the Regency Hotel on Douglas front in room 104, I like it very much.’

Alicia Silverstone and Alex Pettyfer face the press on the red carpet Anthony Horowitz, author, was also a fan of the island: ‘It’s a great film location, a chameleon of an island. The great chase scene that opened the film could not have been shot elsewhere.’

Director, Geoffrey Sax was equally complimentary: ‘We were there for six weeks. The Isle of Man is terrific, it’s a great place to film, very visual’. When asked if he would recommend the island to other filmmakers he said: ‘Yes I would. They (Isle of Man Film) really know what they are doing, very film savvy and delightful to work with. If it was not for Isle of Man Film, the British movie industry would not be able to produce the kind of films it does.’

Filmed almost entirely on the Isle of Man, Stormbreaker is an action packed movie following Alex Rider (Alex Pettyfer) as he tries to save the world from a deadly virus being developed by billionaire criminal Darrius Sayle (Mickey Rourke).

Guests at the Premiere included Isle of Man Film’s Steve Christian, Andrew Fingret and Hilary Dugdale along with DTI Minister Alex Downie and Member Leonard Singer.

Minister & Bill Nighy Alex Downie said ‘The Premiere has been enormously successful and the stars that I talked to spoke very highly of their time on the Island. It is great to be part of such a successful movie and I hope that Islanders take the opportunity to see their Island on the big screen when it is shown at The Broadway Cinema from Friday (21st) as the film features a lot of the local scenery plus many local extras. We first acquired the rights to the Alex Rider series over 3 years ago and we’ve developed the project with our partners Samuelson Productions during that time. It’s taken a lot of hard work but we are now starting to see the results of our efforts and are looking towards developing the second book in the series, Point Blanc’

Tourism and Leisure Minister David Cretney said: ‘Over the past 10 years the film industry on the Island has really grown, resulting in Isle of Man Film being able to secure major productions such as Stormbreaker. This will provide a huge boost to our tourism industry as well as boosting awareness of the Isle of Man itself. The movie goes on general release on Friday and without doubt it will be a box office success.’
