Discounted Compost Bin Scheme launched by Environment Department 24 July 2006

The Department of Local Government and the Environment, working in partnership with Eden Park Garden Centre and Straight Plc (Europe’s leading supplier of recycling containers), has announced the launch of a discounted compost bin scheme for local residents.

Householders can now purchase cut-price compost bins, which will recycle their green waste into nutritious compost, ideal for gardening. Each compost bin comes complete with an information and instruction leaflet and a customer helpline is available for advice and support on all composting matters.

“The Island’s public has already voiced its support for home composting initiatives and we are confident that many householders will now wish to take part in this new scheme”, said Joanne Hetherington, the Department’s Waste Minimisation and Recycling Officer.

A full colour advert has been placed in the local press to inform the public that the compost bins are available in two sizes:

• Compost Converter 220 litre - £14.95 (RRP £40)

• Compost Converter 330 litre - £19.95 (RRP £50)

There are two ways for householders to obtain a compost bin at the reduced price:

• Purchase & collection from Eden Park Garden Centre, Cooil Road, Braddan (Tel: 616116)

• Purchase & home delivery with compost bins delivered directly to the householder. Orders can be placed via a 24hr telephone order line Tel: 0845 130 6090 or online (from 26th July) at www.getcomposting.com/iom. The public is advised that an additional charge of £5 is made for home delivery orders.

This scheme will run until 31 March 2007 and is a part of the Department’s wider initiative to encourage waste reduction at source and environmental protection.
