Anglers asked to look out for tagged salmon 17 August 2006

The Department of Agriculture Fisheries and Forestry are asking anglers fishing in the Island’s rivers to look out for tagged salmon.

In 2004 the Inland Fisheries Section microtagged over 10,000 one year old salmon reared at the hatchery in Laxey, and these fish were released to the Rivers Laxey and Douglas.

The first of the adult fish originating from these young salmon are expected to return to Manx rivers this summer, after spending a year in their feeding grounds at sea.

The microtag is only 1mm long and located in the snout of the fish. Tagged fish can easily be identified by the lack of an adipose fin (the small fleshy fin on the back of the fish towards the tail), which was clipped off during the tagging process.

By retrieving the tags, which have a special coding marked on them, the Department will be able to collect valuable information on the behaviour patterns of hatchery reared fish after they have been stocked out, and also monitor the success of the stocking programme.

Fisheries Officers have equipment for detecting the presence of a tag in a fish, and will need to remove the head in order to retrieve the tag.

The Department is offering a small reward for the successful retrieval of microtags, and all captures should be reported to the Inland Fisheries section on 685857 or 812224.
