Conservation Work At the Great Laxey Wheel 18 October 2006

The Laxey wheel and vista over the valleyAfter a short period of conservation work during the summer period the Great Laxey Wheel, is once again fully operational. Visitors now have a last opportunity for summer 2006 to marvel at the largest wheel of its kind, take a glimpse into the miners’ daily lives and explore the natural and mechanical splendour of the Mines Trail.

Earlier in the summer an irregularity in the timber link rod, linking the axle to the rods viaduct, was noted during one of the weekly routine inspections. This component is crucial to the Wheel’s operation. On closer inspection it was noted that the rod had started to fail, requiring an immediate halt to the turning of the Laxey Wheel, to prevent further damage to the wheel and also in the interests of visitor safety.

A visiting family outside the Mines Trail aditSteve Blackford, Head of Properties at Manx National Heritage, commented:

“The section that had sustained damage compromised the support to the middle of the beam and left no alternative but to replace it in its entirety. Unfortunately it was necessary for the Wheel to remain static until the conservation works were complete.”

The Laxey wheel will be open until 31st October when along with the other seasonal sites, Rushen Abbey, Cregneash Folk Village, Castle Rushen, The Nautical Museum, The Old Grammar School, The Old House of Keys, The Grove and Peel Castle, will close for winter. From November 1st visitors can still explore the award-winning Story of Mann at Manx National Heritage’s year long sites namely The House of Manannan in Peel, the Manx Museum and Bay Room restaurant in Douglas, Niarbyl Cafe and Visitor Centre and the Sound Visitor Centre and Restaurant.
