New Chief Officer for Office of Fair Trading 23 October 2006

The Civil Service Commission is please to announce the appointment of Nick Black as the new Chief Officer of the Office of Fair Trading. The current Chief Officer, Ken Kinrade, is leaving to take up the post of Chief Executive of the Department of Local Government and the Environment. Nick will join the Office in early November.

Nick is currently the Chief Health and Safety Inspector for the Department of Local Government and the Environment. He has held this post for almost five years, having previously been a Senior Inspector in the Department's Health and Safety at Work Inspectorate.

Nick said "The Office of Fair Trading is a highly respected organisation that is unique in offering a wider range of services than any of its similarly named counterparts around the British Isles. Ken has built up an enviable reputation and an excellent team of officers. I have worked with many of these officers over such issues as petroleum safety and energy policy and am confident that my understanding of these activities and my background in offering advisory and regulatory services will stand me in good stead in my new role. Clearly there will be new challenges for me. I have for many years worked to protect the public and I know that consumer protection is at the centre of the Office's remit. But the range of work falling to the Office covers a wide range of other responsibilities as well and will take me into new areas. The Office has responsibility for not just individual traders but the broader market and there are a number of pricing investigations underway. I am very much looking forward to joining the highly professional team at the OFT and my appointment will hopefully complement them and enable them to continue to provide the high quality services that are vital to the economic, environmental and social well being of the Island."

Chairman of the Office of Fair Trading, Quintin Gill MHK, said "I believe we have made a good appointment and I am sure the knowledge and experience Nick brings to this post will be invaluable. He is well known and respected not only in Government circles but also in the business sector and the wider community for the work he has done in health and safety for DLGE. I am sure he will carry on the good work of the Office."
