‘A matter of life and death’: The Manx Museum and Natural History 23 November 2006

Kate Hawkins, Manx National Heritage Curator for Natural History will continue Manx National Heritage’s successful winter lecture programme with a lecture on natural history in our modern world, which will take place at the Manx Museum lecture theatre on 8th December at 7.30pm.

The lecture will be of interest to natural historians and the general public alike, and will explore the role of natural history in the modern museum and how changing attitudes towards specimens have shaped our relationship with the natural world.

Visitors exploring Manx National Heritage’s Natural History Kate will also cover some personal reminiscences of a career in museums, including a behind the scenes look at the making of the new Natural History Gallery at the Manx Museum, which opened in July 2005.

Kate Hawkins, Curator of Natural History for Manx National Heritage said:

“This is an opportunity to give people an insight into some of the work we do in museums: what we collect and why, how attitudes towards natural history in museums have changed, and what relevance natural history collections have in the modern world. There will also be a look at how the new natural history gallery at the Manx Museum was developed.”

This lecture coincides with the Manx Museum hosting the Wildlife Photographer of the Year 2005 Exhibition, the world’s most respected forum for wildlife photographic art. The exhibition formed by the Natural History Museum in conjunction with BBC Wildlife Magazine, offers the audience a vivid and often startling window on the natural world, which says as much about how individual photographers see their subjects as it does about the subjects themselves.

The lecture will start at 7.30pm and will be held at the Manx Museum Lecture Theatre. Doors open at 7pm and admission is free of charge.

The Manx Museum is open all year from 10am to 5pm, Monday to Saturday, with the exceptions of Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Years Day and is part of the award-winning Story of Mann.
