Douglas triumphs again! 30 November 2006

The Department of Tourism and Leisure is delighted that Douglas will represent the Isle of Man in the Britain in Bloom finals next year.

Douglas has once again triumphed in the town category of the 2006 Island in Bloom competition and was presented with a silver award at the national Britain in Bloom ceremony held in Perth earlier this year. Having gained the most points overall this year the town will represent the Island at national level again in 2007.

The winner in the hotel category of the towns section of the competition this year was the Sefton and today Island in Bloom co-ordinator, Marlene Kneen, and Island in Bloom judge, Graham Newsome, presented the hotel maintenance assistant Brian Butler with a certificate and B&Q voucher.

Marlene Kneen said: ‘Douglas stands out for being a clean, well maintained town and it is obvious that the residents and businesses take pride in their environment. I wish them every success in the Britain in Bloom finals 2007.’

The Island in Bloom competition aims to promote cleanliness, along with floral displays, throughout the Island in conjunction with the Royal Horticultural Society's Britain in Bloom competition. Britain in Bloom is a proactive campaign of communities creating long term improvements to their local environment. All local authorities on the Isle of Man are invited to participate and each year there are a large number of entries.

The Department is grateful to the honorary judges, Ken Barnes and Graham Newsome.
