Harbour fuelling facility, Port St Mary 9 March 2007

Following further minor damage sustained on Sunday 4th and Monday 5th March by the fuelling facility on the Alfred Pier, Port St Mary, the Department has decided to temporarily remove it to safe storage. This will provide an opportunity to repair and improve the facility without further risk of damage or pollution due to severe weather and sea conditions. The Department intends to return the facility to the Pier before the summer season.

Captain Michael Brew, Director of Harbours, said:

‘The Department regrets having to take this action, but as there are no current users of the facility it can be undertaken without any adverse impact on customers.
‘Over the forthcoming summer, the use of the facility will be monitored and interested parties consulted so that the Department can come to a decision on the need for it to remain in place over the 2007/08 winter period.
‘The recent consultation was valuable and produced some interesting comments but has been overtaken by events. The views expressed will be kept on file until the whole matter is reviewed later this summer. I will be writing very shortly to the consultees to explain the present situation.’
