School 'almost complete' after frenzy of fund-raising 21 May 2007

A SCHOOL in Uganda being funded by St Ninian's High School is nearing completion.

Staff and pupils from the Douglas school set out to raise £30,000 towards the school at the start of the autumn term last September, launching its Mad4CiU - Make a Difference for Children in Uganda - Appeal. A pupil earns his stripes

After a frenzy of fund-raising, the total was exceeded with several months to spare, allowing work to get under way on the school for 300 in Kiwumu.

On Sunday a successful May Fayre, which was bathed in sunshine and well supported, brought in a further £4,300 and boosted the appeal to more than £36,500.

Teacher Graham Bassett said: 'The school is nearly finished and our sixth form students will travel to Uganda in July to paint it inside and out.'

He added: 'Some of the extra money will be used to provide books and equipment for the school and the remainder will go towards a project to build houses on the 17-acre school site for street children.'
