First of Many Douglas Farmers’ Markets a Great Success 10 July 2007

The Island’s first officially government accredited Farmers’ Market was opened last Saturday, 7th July, at 10am at the Villa Marina Colonnade in Douglas by Minister for Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry, Phil Gawne.

The opening of this market was timed to coincide with the end of Manx National week and the event included Manx dancing and other attractions, plus support from the Young Farmers. Available at the market was: Manx meat and organic meat, cheeses, eggs, Manx Loaghtan meat, kippers, mushrooms, vegetables, fruit, preserves, bread, cakes, ice cream plus much much more.

The Market was so successful that demand was greater than the supply on the day. Many stalls were sold out by 12.30 p.m. particularly the vegetable stalls.

Future Douglas Farmers’ Markets are to be held on the first Saturday of each month from 10am-2pm. The Department is backing the move to raise the profile of high quality local food and reconnect local consumers with Manx producers. The move ties in with the successful I Love Manx campaign run by the Manx National Farmers’ Union and the Department.

The Department strongly believes that by raising the profile of high quality local food, this will influence the buying behaviour of all local consumers to start looking specifically for Manx products when they shop. This has been, to date, a Department initiative and is now to be handed over to the Isle of Man Farmers’ Market Committee to ensure its continued success.

Minister Phil Gawne observed: “I am excited that we are able to provide Manx consumers with this opportunity to buy fresh, seasonal and tasty products. This is a giant step forward in our development of a local food culture.”

Notes for Editors:

The Douglas Farmers’ Market follows on from the success of the two established Farmers’ Markets on the Island. The Green Mann Market is held on Thursdays 11am – 3pm at Ballabrooie Farm in St. Johns and the Ramsey Farmers’ Market held at Albert Road School Playground on Saturday morning’s 10am – 1pm.
