West Baldwin By-pass Contract Awarded 2 August 2007

Island Drainage and Groundwork mainlaying team have been awarded the contract to install 2.2km of a main to allow water to be supplied from the Sulby reservoir through to the new Douglas Water Treatment Works should the need arise. Work will commence on Monday, 6th August for a 26 week contract period.

Maintaining the security of supplies to Douglas is of prime importance. Recent schemes have allowed the Authority to transfer water from Sulby Reservoir into the West Baldwin valley. The final phase of the project is a by-pass main constructed around the West Baldwin Reservoir which will allow Sulby water to be transmitted directly to the new Douglas Water Treatment Works in an emergency.

Island Drainage and Groundwork Limited were the contractor for delivering the raw water main through to the new Douglas Water Treatment Works. This main is now connected to the new works. The new Douglas Water Treatment Works has commenced its commissioning period with a scheduled hand over early in 2008. Island Drainage and Groundwork re-instatement team are continuing to carry out work in the West Baldwin valley.

The route of the West Baldwin by-pass will necessitate in the West Baldwin Road being closed for a short period in November/December. Discussions will take place with all stakeholders nearer to the proposed closure.
