DHSS Waiting List Initiative successfully launched 9 August 2007

Following Tynwald’s agreement to grant a motion for an additional £2 million to undertake Waiting List Initiatives, the Department of Health and Social Security is pleased to announce that the first Orthopaedic outpatient clinic which offered additional New Patient slots was held on Wednesday 8 August 2007 at Noble’s Hospital.

Between now and October, it is planned to hold outpatient clinics that will enable more than 250 additional New Patient appointments to be offered to Patients whose names are on the Orthopaedic outpatient waiting lists. The main objective of these clinics is to offer appointments to Patients who have waited a considerable time for a clinic appointment, whilst also allowing some Patients who need to be seen sooner, because of clinical need, to be seen more quickly than they would have been seen otherwise.

Eddie Teare MHK, Minister for Health and Social Security said,

“I am pleased that we will now be able to make a positive impact on the long waiting lists for Orthopaedic services. However, now we need for Patients who receive an Orthopaedic clinic appointment to actually go to the clinic. If you receive notification of an appointment and you are not able to attend for any reason, please let the Hospital know so they can then offer the appointment to somebody else who is able to use it. Please help us to make the most effective use of the extra resources”

Additional Orthopaedic operating sessions are planned to start in October, when new equipment that has been ordered is expected to arrive. These additional operating sessions will mean that Patients whose names go on the Inpatient waiting lists following the extra clinic appointments will have a reasonably short waiting time for their surgery.

The Waiting List monies have enabled an additional Staff Grade Doctor to work with Orthopaedic Consultant Mr Samir Zeitoune to provide additional Orthopaedic elective care.

Mr Zeitoune said,

“I look forward to meeting the challenges involved in the proposed steps to eliminate the current waiting lists”.
