New building to open at Ramsey Grammar School 16 October 2007

MINISTER for Education Anne Craine MHK will open the new South Building at Ramsey Grammar School on Wednesday, October 24.

The building at the heart of the £6.48 million development was built by Auldyn Construction Ltd. It houses a dedicated sixth form centre and special needs facilities and will be used in the teaching of Art, Design Technology, Social Sciences and Land-based Sciences. Staff and students on the School Council had input into the plans, which were then brought to life by architects Savage and Chadwick. Mrs Craine, who is also an MHK for Ramsey, says it will be a great honour to unveil the plaque at the school where she was head girl.

Mrs Craine said:

‘There have been many changes to the structure of the school since I was a student there. It is very pleasing to see Ramsey Grammar School continue to evolve and develop its facilities for the benefit of the students and community in the North of the Island.’

The Minister added:

‘I am very proud that the Island attaches such importance to education. It certainly makes my job easier when the Government recognises the worth of making serious investment in improving the learning environment for our young people. The South Building is a fine example of that investment and will enhance the good work that has been carried on by the school in previously less suitable accommodation. I look forward to seeing the facilities being used and have no doubt that both students and staff will benefit from having such a hugely improved area to work in. Congratulations are due to all those who have had a part in moving this project to fruition.’

Headteacher David Trace said students and visitors to the school were really impressed with the South Building. He said:

‘Current and future students are fortunate indeed to have such an innovative and expansive environment for learning.’

The opening ceremony at 2.30pm will be attended by Chief Minister the Hon Tony Brown MHK, President of Tynwald the Hon Noel Cringle MLC, Speaker of the House of Keys the Hon Steve Rodan MHK and Mary Bruce JP, Chairman of Ramsey Commissioners. Introducing the Minister will be the Chairman of the Governors, Hazel Bradley, who is the Board of Education member for Ayre.

The new facilities will be dedicated by the Archdeacon of Man, the Venerable Brian Smith.

The Ramsey Grammar School Brass Group will play at the opening and there will be a performance of an excerpt from an Arthur Miller play, The Crucible.

Ramsey Grammar School has 1,060 students and 140 teaching and support staff.
