DHSS Announces Temporary Reduction in Opening Hours for Ramsey Minor Injuries Unit 16 October 2007

The Department of Health and Social Security announces that with great reluctance it will be forced to introduce a temporary reduction in the opening hours for the Minor Injuries Unit at Ramsey and District Cottage Hospital.

Specialist staffing shortages are placing a considerable burden on remaining staff, and in order to avoid the staff becoming overstretched and overtired, it is necessary to temporary reduce the opening hours in the interests of patient and staff well-being. From Monday 15 October 2007, for a period no longer than four weeks, the Minor Injuries Unit will close at 8.00pm, rather than 10.00pm each evening. Research has shown these hours to be the quietest time for the Unit, which will hopefully result in the reduced opening hours having as little impact as possible on patient care.

Nurses employed at the Minor Injuries Unit in Ramsey are specialist practitioners, who undertake a recognised accredited course in the field to provide the advanced skills required for the successful running of the MIU. As a result, the MIU cannot operate without nurses with the necessary qualifications, and unfortunately there are no additional qualified nurses available to Ramsey and District Cottage Hospital at this time.

Patients requiring treatment during the period of 8.00pm to 10.00pm should seek alternative care, either through the MEDS out-of-hours GP Service, Noble’s Hospital, or the Emergency Services as appropriate.
