DHSS Announce Plans for the Opening of Winter Night Shelter for Homeless 17 October 2007

Eddie Teare MHK, Minister for Health and Social Security, in response to a Tynwald question, today announced the Department of Health and Social Security’s plans to open a winter night shelter for the Isle of Man’s homeless.

Eddie Teare MHK, Minister for Health and Social Security said,

“The Department is very aware of the need to find an appropriate location, where the Island’s homeless can escape the cold winter nights. The Department is currently assessing two buildings, which meet the requirements and we hope to hand the selected property over to our service provider in the very near future.”

Andrew Swithinbank, Director of Social Services and Mike Harrington, Director of Estate Services, are due to asses the two possible premises for the shelter and make plans for immediate availability. The Director’s will be joined at the assessment by the Pastor of Broadway Baptist Church, whose church host’s the current homeless facilities and a senior officer of the Salvation Army.

The opening of the shelter is part of an ongoing DHSS initiative to tackle and prevent homelessness and support the Island’s homeless. The initiative has the support of voluntary, community and church organisations and will be coordinated by a recently appointed Homelessness Project Development Officer, who is due to start the role in January.
