Section of Richmond HIll to be resurfaced 18 October 2007

A section of the Douglas-bound carriageway at the top of Richmond Hill will be resurfaced this weekend.

Tests were carried out on the skidding resistance of the road after two accidents on the same stretch of highway on Saturday afternoon.

Director of Highways Bruce Hannay explained:

‘The Department is reacting quickly to what was identified as a problem. We met police on site to discuss the options that were open to us. Having carried out the tests, we determined that the most appropriate course of action is to resurface a stretch of approximately 100 metres, from the “Slow Down” signal approaching the hill down to the first bend at Richmond House.
‘Temporary traffic lights will be installed and a 20mph speed limit will be in place whilst the resurfacing takes place. Of course, the work is subject to weather conditions. However, if they are favourable, we will have the road reopened as normal by Sunday evening.’

Inspector Derek Flint, of the Roads Policing Unit, said:

‘The accidents at the weekend were not serious, in so much as they were “damage only” incidents. However, they reinforce the need for motorists to slow down in damp weather, not just on that stretch of road, but in general. We thank the DoT for their timely intervention in respect of these engineering works and it’s another example of the excellent partnership we enjoy with that Department.’
