Students seek help with survey 18 February 2008

A TEAM of three marketing students, currently studying for the Professional Diploma in Marketing at the Isle of Man International Business School (the IBS), have entered a Chartered Institute of Marketing student competition known as “The Pitch” (www.cim-nw.org.uk/thepitch/index.php).

Emma Boardman, Friends Provident International; Lynsey Radcliffe, Manx National Heritage, and Gemma Webb, of the IBS, will be the second team from the Business School to compete in this annual competition.

The 2007 IBS team, comprising Carroll Powell, Chris Kent and Laura Sardo, finished in second place, so this year’s students (supported by Heather Smallwood, CIM Programme Manager at the Business School) will have a tough act to follow.

Working together, they are required to demonstrate their ability to develop a marketing/communications strategy, to handle budgets and to deliver a succinct and powerful three minute presentation or “pitch”, within a tight two-week timeframe.

On Wednesday 13th February they were given a “brief” (a problem which they must create solutions to), in relation to the British grocery industry and in particular the Aldi supermarket chain (www.aldi.co.uk).

To help our students come up with some innovative solutions to the problem, they would like to increase their understanding of individuals’ grocery shopping behaviour and their attitudes to Aldi in particular.

To achieve this, they would like to gather real feedback directly from consumers - and especially people who live in the UK, who have previously lived in the UK or who have shopped in an Aldi store.

However, given that our students are based on the Isle of Man, where there isn’t a single Aldi store for them to visit, their research into customer attitudes requires that they conduct the bulk of their research by using a short online survey.

How can you help?

First, please could you complete the Survey (www.ibs.ac.im/thesurvey) yourself as soon as possible and by Wednesday 20th February at the latest.

Second, please encourage as many of your friends, relatives, colleagues and contacts as possible to complete the Survey. In particular, please encourage anyone who lives in the UK, who has previously lived in the UK, or who has shopped in an Aldi store, to complete it.

Without your help our students may struggle to get a true understanding of the British grocery industry relative to their fellow competitors who will all have UK consumers and Aldi supermarkets on their doorstep.

The students are seeking to gather at least 200 responses by Wednesday 20th February.

They will present their final pitch just a week later on Wednesday 27th February at the offices of McCann Erickson (www.mccann.co.uk) in Prestbury, Cheshire.

To help, click on the PDF below and complete the survey.
