Steam Railway - Collision at Port Soderick 20 May 2008

On Monday 19 May at 10.35 the first service train (No.4 Loch), travelling from Douglas to Port Erin, was involved in a collision with a van at Port Soderick railway station.

Emergency services attended the scene; thankfully there were no reported injuries to the driver of the vehicle or the 74 passengers and crew on board the train.

Another locomotive was dispatched to the station and brought the FOUR carriages and passengers back to Douglas station. The12.20 Douglas to Port Erin service was cancelled.

The vehicle was removed from the track and normal scheduled rail services resumed with the 14.20 Douglas to Port Erin service.

The van, which belongs to contractors who were undertaking work for the owners of Port Soderick Station House, had been attempting to cross the track when it was struck by the train.

The Department of Transports Vehicle Inspector was called out by the Police to check the condition of the van. The Department of Tourism and Leisure has contacted the Health and Safety at Work Inspectorate and made them aware of the incident. A report will be produced and sent to them in the near future.

The front of the locomotive was damaged; however repairs are currently underway and it will be back in service in the very near future.
