Welcome aboard the Visit Ramsey Bus 23 May 2008

Members of the Department of Tourism and Leisure Staff were joined by over fifty year 7 pupils from Murray’s Road School in Douglas last week, when they travelled to Ramsey on the Visit Ramsey bus to play cricket and rugby with the Department’s Sports Development Officers.

Since the announcement was made several months ago that the Laxey to Ramsey MER line would be out of action until the end of July 2008, the Department has been working closely with Ramsey Town Commissioners and Ramsey Chamber of Trade to develop some extra initiatives for the town.

As a result a number of plans have been put in place by the Department of Tourism and Leisure, Ramsey Commissioners and a variety of organisations and volunteers keen to encourage visitors to Ramsey.

Many events are planned for the town over the coming months, arranged by a variety of volunteers and organisations. Events to be staged include a Fun Day in Mooragh Park, Kite Flying Workshops, an Edwardian Day at The Grove Museum, Ramsey National Week, Ramsey Sprint, Ramsey Rocks and a Filipino Festival.

On 23 May the Department of Tourism and Leisure has arranged for The Getty Exhibition, which spans 100 years of the TT Races and features some previously unseen shots, to make its Island debut in Ramsey.

The Department of Tourism and Leisure is also providing a vintage bus service, which will run every Thursday from 12 June to the end of July, to bring passengers from Douglas and Laxey to Ramsey. The service will be a rare opportunity for visitors travelling to Laxey on the MER to carry on their journey to Ramsey by vintage bus.

Tourism and Leisure Minister Adrian Earnshaw said:

‘The Visit Ramsey bus will be an eye catching feature on the Island’s roads for the rest of 2008 and we hope it will inspire people to visit the town and spend a few hours enjoying the shopping and leisure facilities that Ramsey has to offer. I would like to thank Ramsey Town Commissioners and Ramsey Chamber of Trade for the hard work they have put into the project and I wish all the town’s businesses and residents a wonderful summer.’
