NHS 60th Anniversary – Isle of Man Celebrations 27 June 2008

DHSS LogoOn 5th July this year, the NHS celebrates its 60th ‘birthday’. Here in the Isle of Man, a number of excellent suggestions have been put forward by Department of Health and Social Security staff to celebrate the occasion. The July issue of the Department’s staff newsletter, InTouch, and local newspapers will feature those suggestions which have been progressed, but here is just a flavour:

  • The Tell Me Project will take place at Murray’s Road School, Douglas on 1 July. This is a Department of Education/Age Concern project, where school students from Murray’s Road School, Douglas together with some clients from Age Concern, will interview members of the public about their memories of the NHS. Minister Eddie Teare MHK and Chief Executive Officer David Killip will also be interviewed by the children about the ‘next 60 years’. Local media organisations will be in attendance and the recorded interviews will go on both the Department’s website and the Tell Me Project website.
  • A Past and Present series published in Isle of Man Newspapers, where retired and current staff are interviewed about their working lives e.g. theatre nursing then and now, mental health nursing then and now, district nursing then and now etc. We will offer recorded interviews/transcripts from media coverage to the Museum
  • Display at Noble’s Hospital in July, e.g. old uniforms, medical bag etc: Being planned by Noble’s and will use memorabilia from the Museum and other sources
  • Isle of Man Newspapers Commemorative Supplement to include some of the interviews from the Past and Present series
  • A dedicated four page feature in the July edition of InTouch staff newsletter
  • A special ‘1948’ edition of Nursing Matters, Noble’s Hospital inhouse newsletter
  • Dedicated pages on the Department of Health and Social Security website to record interviews, photo’s, celebratory activity etc, will be launched w/c 30 June
  • 60 Helping Hands leaflet summarising 60 local sources of help/advise, wil be published in July/August
  • Commemorative tree planting at Noble’s Hospital – details to follow
  • Display of NHS memorabilia e.g. old uniforms, medical bag etc. at Noble’s Hospital in July/August
  • New pages on the DHSS website: To record interviews, photo’s, celebratory activity etc.
