Anniversary of Classic English Icon 30 June 2008

In celebration of one of Britain’s favourite bears, Pobjoy Mint has issued a charming new coin to mark the 50th anniversary of Paddington Bear on behalf of the Isle of Man Government.

Paddington Bear first appeared in 1958 as a fictional character in Michael Bond’s first children’s book ‘A Bear Called Paddington.’ The endearing character derives from a lone teddy which Bond noticed on a shelf in a London store on Christmas Eve of 1956. Unable to resist, Bond bought the bear as a present for his wife and as they were living in the area they named him Paddington and just ten days later, Bond had written his first book. Another ten books have since been written and to mark 50 years of Paddington Bear, Michael Bond has written a new story ‘Paddington Here and Now.’

The new delightful coin is housed in a miniature suitcase with a miniature replica Paddington and depicts a scene from the very first story book. Paddington stands in his trademark duffel coat and hat bearing the label ‘Wanted on Voyage’ with a note attached to his coat which reads simply ‘Please look after this bear. Thank you.’

The coin is available in cupro nickel, proof sterling silver and gold. In addition, to really make Paddington come to life, coloured visions of the cupro nickel and proof sterling silver coins are also available.

The coin in cupro nickel is priced £19.95 and £24.95 in colour and can be purchased from the Isle of Man Post Office website www.iompost.com
