Students hooked after school's first fishing contest 22 July 2008

THERE was fishy business going on among Castle Rushen High School students at the first inter-house fishing contest.

Pairs of students from the four houses - Langness, Bradda, Carrick and Scarlett - fished furiously for two and a half hours on the outer pier at Port St Mary.

The six boys and two girls used a variety of bait, including crabs, lugworms and queenie scraps, to lure the fish onto their hooks. All the fish were weighed and then quickly put back into the sea. CRHS fishing comp

The inaugural trophy seemed likely to go to Langness house after some excellent catches of callig and coley by Killian Lamont-Gilroy.

However, it was a case of 'the one that got away' as, in the closing minutes of the competition, Bradda house took the coveted trophy after Robin Gledhill caught an impressive 3lb ballen wrasse.

Students were tested on their fishing knowledge at school and the best were invited to take part in the competition.

They had to provide their own equipment and rely solely on their own fishing ability.

Tom Williams, the teacher who organised the event, said:

‘The students all put in a great deal of effort and deserved praise for their fishing skills. I hope that the fishing competition will become an annual event for the school.’
