Fire safety officers attend school activity day 29 July 2008

St Ninian's activity dayA SERIOUS message about fire safety was conveyed in a fun way during a school’s activity day.

Officers from the Isle of Man Fire and Rescue Service attended St Ninian’s High School to pass on information, advice and life skills to students.

They highlighted a number of important safety issues through the use of the Zurich-sponsored interactive Mini and the chip pan fire demonstrator.

Students also took the opportunity to put on proper fire kit and tackle a small blaze in the gas-powered fire demonstration unit.

The fire safety message was mainly aimed at the older students who were leaving full-time education at the end of the school term. However, other year groups also joined in the fun.

Sub Officer Peter Killey, who is currently attached to the community safety team, said:

‘The safety input that we offer the students is invaluable as a lot of them will be setting up home on their own in the next couple of years. It is important for them to understand the potential dangers posed by fire and how best to protect themselves.’Fire officers and students

Station Officer Carl Kinvig added:

‘The activity day also helps to create a bond between the emergency services and the younger people in our community. There is a mutual respect between young people and the Island’s Fire Service and events like this help to maintain that.’
