Isle Of Man Visitors Rewarded For Loyalty 21 August 2008

Bill and Sheryl Bates from The Wirral received a special welcome from Tourism and Leisure Minister Martyn Quayle MHK when he learned that Bill has been visiting for 56 years and Sheryl 20 years.

The couple’s 16 year old son Mike was also welcomed by the DTL Minister. He has been coming with his parents for 16 years and enjoys visiting the Island so much that he has expressed a wish to live here when he is older.

The couple have been staying at The Inglewood Hotel on Queens Promenade in Douglas for the last five years but in fact they have stayed in nearly all of the hotels along that stretch of the promenade during the years they have been visiting the Island.

Bill Bates said: ‘I have a great passion for the Isle of Man and my earliest memory is of the steam train. I can remember the fireman inviting me to stand on the foot plate on the ‘Fenella – No 8’ for the duration of the journey when I was about 5 years old and she is still running today! The Island has everything we need for a holiday and Sheryl and I particularly like walking through the beautiful countryside and travelling on the transport network.’

Mr Quayle MHK said:

‘It is wonderful that Mr and Mrs Bates have chosen to holiday on the Isle of Man for so many consecutive years. They will always be welcome here and I would like to thank the propriertors of The Inglewood Hotel, Pip and Andy, for letting me know about their impressive record of holidaying here.’
Bill, Sheryl and Mike will be returning to the Island on two occasions next year, the first for a family re-union during Easter and then again for their annual holiday in the Summer.
